Livestock Containment With No Physical Fences

09/23/2022 03:00 PM - 06:00 PM CT

Description

Get an up-close look at virtual fencing technology with goats as the SFA Ecological Service Livestock Network hosts an event, "Livestock Containment With No Physical Fences," from 3 to 6 p.m. at Elleholm Farm. The technology may also be of interest to sheep and cattle producers.

Hosted in cooperation with the Munch Bunch and owner Allysse Sorensen, whose goats will be in action browsing a thicket of buckthorn and prickly ash. There is no perimeter or paddock fencing being used; the research project is evaluating the effectiveness of no fence containment in a variety of locations and vegetations.

"Nofence" grazing technology consists of a solar-powered GPS collar and a digital boundary that the user creates. The collar communicates with an app and web portal via the mobile network. Learn how the goats are trained, how the system works, and most importantly, to hear if the goats escaped or not.

Free. Registration requested, walkups welcome. Snacks will be provided.

Address: 15326 318th St. Center City, MN 55012
