Prescribed Grazing Field Day

08/25/2022 09:00 AM - 01:00 PM CT

Description

A field day focused on forage species, fencing techniques, grazing/cost-share programs, and calculating forage rations will be held at the Symanietz Family Farm, owned and operated by Greg and Rebecca Symanietz. The Symanietzes operate a 47 cow/calf pair beef herd along with 135 acres of owned and rented cropland which includes corn, soybeans, and alfalfa. The Symanietzes have made improvements to their grazing system by adding fencing, an armored cattle lane, and a watering system with a heavy use area protection surrounding it. These practices have allowed them to rotationally graze their cattle on over 60 acres of pasture, as well as improve the pasture’s productivity, herd health, and protect sensitive areas. The Symanietzes also started to implement no-till and cover crops on their land.

The topics presented will be geared towards landowners who are interested in implementing prescribed grazing or those who are currently implementing grazing on their operation. Information on the Minnesota Ag Water Quality Certification Program (MAWQCP) will also be presented.

A pasture walk will take place after morning presentations have concluded. Please come with appropriate outdoor footwear and clothing for variable weather and walking conditions. At the end of the pasture walk, attendees will have the opportunity to talk with staff, other landowners, and the Symanietzes.
