Field Day at Gray's Tomatoes

07/09/2022 02:00 PM - 05:00 PM CT

Description

Join the Crow River Chapter at this commercial tomato growing farm for an enlightening tour of their facilities and practices. Gray Schmidt and Jules Schoenecker grow tomatoes for grocery stores and restaurants, as well as direct marketing for canning and preserving.

Several varieties are grown both in their six 24'x200' high tunnels and in the field. They graft 2000 red hybrid tomatoes, and all the hybrids go in the tunnels. The remainder of the heirlooms and several cherry varieties are grown in the field. They market around 40,000 pounds of tomatoes each year. We'll also visit their seeding shed, greenhouses and packshed. Jules and Grey also sell bedding plants in the spring, and they grow a number of other vegetables as well, though their primary focus is on tomatoes.
